families in the probate and mental
health spaces.
A close family member of Guy’s is an individual with Schizophrenia so Guy has first-hand knowledge of the challenges that families face when working in the mental health system.
Because of this, Guy has passionately advocated for individuals with mental illness and addiction challenges and their families. Guy also serves as guardian and conservator for vulnerable adults and works to assure that all his clients are treated with dignity and respect.
Kate MacEwen
AdvoKate Founder, Professional Guardian
As an older sister to a brother living with addiction and Schizophrenia, Kate severed as her brother's guardian before realizing that the role is very challenging for a family member. It is difficult to be both a sister and guardian to an adult sibling, and often times being so close to the situation causes significant family conflict. Kate realized it was better to find a professional to take over the role.
When searching for a new professional guardian for her brother, Kate realized that there was an urgent need for passionate, qualified guardians to help families navigate often complex health and legal systems and so she founded AdvoKate.
In addition to her experience with her brother, Kate spent 14 years working in the human services sector, much of which she worked with adults with developmental disabilities. Her work with this population afforded her the opportunity to work closely with many counties' Community Mental Health Agencies.
Guardianship 101:
What is a professional guardian?
A guardian is a court-appointed person, institution, or agency that manages an individual’s affairs when they are unable to make decisions on their own.
Who determines if guardianship is neccessary?
The courts take the issue of guardianship very seriously. The court will look closely at the individual’s cognitive well-being, ability to make decisions independently and provide for their personal needs, medical status, safety issues, finances, family support, and more.
No, the role of guardian does not generally include the management of money, however often times guardians can be conservators or serve as a representative payee, however these roles must be officially assigned and are not automatic with a guardianship
do you manage client's money as a guardian?

What is the difference between full and limited Guardians?
A limited guardianship is a guardianship where the guardian has only those powers granted by the court order appointing the guardian. Whereas, a full time guardian has all powers available to guardians under the law.
